FOLLOWERSHIP

Lately I have found myself engrossed in the nature, responsibility, and expression of leadership. Countless resources exist via books, internet articles, seminars, and mentorship. One can easily spend many hours and dollars studying this hot topic. The plethora of power-hungry hopefuls can be viewed daily as they claw, deceive, and manipulate their way up the corporate ladder. Unfortunately while doing so, these ambition-driven souls often forego God-given responsibilities, relationships and integrity. To the church’s shame, its zealous entourage too diligently strives for coveted leadership positions and the supposed benefits of “kings and priests”.

Yet in all, I have by the grace of God discovered the key to leadership promotion, whether born or cultivated. ALL great leaders must first respond diligently and whole-heartedly to followership. Without the ability and willingness to submit one's self wholly to the base rank of a servant and follower, the hopeful will never fully achieve his/her dreams of commanding oversight excellence.

Jeremiah 10:23 proclaims:

O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

Mankind is not designed to direct his own destiny or lead his own way. We are hard-wired to follow the Lord. Under His direction we will be successful. Abraham, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Moses, Jesus and the apostles were FIRST servants, catering to the will of their Master, their LEADER, their God. Through following the counsel and order of Supreme administration and by remaining in the conduit of intimate spiritual relationship, each servant found necessary life direction and divine promotion to fulfill their leadership calling.

Godly leadership's pre-requisite is sincere willingness and proven ability to be servants--NOT gifting, not talent, not organization or oratory saavy as some suppose. Abraham, in Genesis 18 ran to serve the three visitors that appeared in the heat of the day. Only after providing a sacrificial meal and standing while the Lord and angels sat under the tree, did he receive the blessed promise of a child. Only after serving was he able to intercede for the lives of Sodom's righteous.

Jesus said:

If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honor. John 12:26

Clearly one must serve Christ by following. Then he / she will be where Jesus is and then through the proving of dedicated and sincere service shall God, our Father honor the servant.

Note Ephesians 4:11 &12:

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Each of these positions are coveted note and honor worthy pinnacles of Christendom. But the true purpose of these stations are ministry or SERVICE. These are not merely roles to make governmental decisions, wear designer fabrics or invoke one’s authoritative power or fleshly will. These are truly life-surrendering, purposed suffering-filled assignments for humble servants who freely and sincerely will their life AWAY to follow the example, commands, and will of God.

Let us remember the words of Christ Jesus found in Mark 10:43-45:

But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

In His Service,
